Nitrox Course is generally completed in one day with a short video, a further explanation from your instructor and short test. As with the course being mainly theory, no dives are necessary for its completion.
Experience If you have ever been on a dive boat or in a dive shop you will have heard the word Nitrox, there is simply no getting away from it. It is plastered on the windows, walls, doors and on cylinders in green and yellow stickers NITROX!
What is it?
Well, Nitrox was originally just normal air, which has been blended adding a little more oxygen (O2) to the cylinder than the normal air mixes.

Not just anyone can mix Nitrox, the filling of Nitrox cylinders is specialised and must be done by a trained mix gas blender.
So what does it do?
Nitrox, in a nutshell, reduces the amount of nitrogen (N2) that our bodies absorb on dives. By reducing the amount of nitrogen in the mixing process (blending), the diver breathes more O2 thus reducing the risk of Decompression Sickness (bends).
Nitrox actually reduces the depth limit that we would be able to reach if we were using air, but significantly increases the time at a given depth.
The maximum depth allowed on Nitrox diving is over 30 metres so the restrictions are not so restrictive as maybe first thought. There is however, a little bit more to learn than just these simple facts, which will be revealed on the Nitrox course.
